Do you work on cottage and waterfront properties?

Yes, most of what we do is on cottage and waterfront properties across the Lake of Bays and Muskoka region. We understand the specific challenges that come with rocky terrain, shoreline access, and the short Muskoka season. Whether you’re looking at new granite stairs down to the dock, a flagstone patio overlooking the water, or a full property transformation, we’ve been doing this kind of work in cottage country for over 20 years.

What areas do you serve?

We work throughout the Lake of Bays area and across Muskoka, including Baysville, Huntsville, Dwight, Port Sydney, Dorset, Bracebridge, and the surrounding townships. If you’re not sure whether your property falls in our range, give us a call or send a message and we’ll let you know.

What types of projects do you take on?

We handle a variety of outdoor work. Our amazing hardscape team installs granite slab steps, natural stone features such as flagstone patios and walkways and retaining walls. We are also experts in correcting and amending drainage as well as building and grading driveways and so much more. Our maintenance team will handle planting projects, tree planting, spring and fall clean-up services, bi-weekly grass cutting, brush chipping and tree services. If there’s a specific project in mind, reach out and we’ll tell you quickly whether it’s something we can help with.

Do you handle the design, or just the installation?

Both. We handle the full process from initial site assessment through design and into construction. When you work with Lake of Bays Landscaping, you’re not handing a plan to a crew and hoping it translates. You’re working directly with the person who will read your property, develop the design, and oversee every stage of the build, with an experienced crew behind him. That continuity matters for how the finished work holds together.

How far in advance should I book?

Reach out whenever you’re ready and we’ll figure it out. We work with clients throughout the season and do our best to make projects happen whenever the timing works. Getting in touch sooner gives us more flexibility on scheduling, but we’re always happy to hear what you have in mind, even mid-season.

How do you charge for your work?

Our larger projects are typically quoted and broken down so the client can see all the expenses. We have an upfront approach that puts the cost of a project in perspective right away. This ensures there are no surprises and the project will be completed on budget. An hourly rate may be set based on job complexity or project changes. Maintenance work is typically billed at a set rate per visit or on a seasonal contract and can also be completed hourly. Payment is handled by e-transfer, personal cheque, cash, or direct deposit.

Are you certified and insured?

Yes to both. Dan holds an MTCU Certificate of Qualification as a Landscape Horticulturist, a trade designation issued by the Ontario government that recognizes formal training and tested competency in the profession. He is also a professional member of Landscape Ontario, the provincial industry association for the horticultural trades, which holds its members to ongoing standards of practice. We carry full liability insurance. These are things you should feel comfortable asking any contractor about before work begins.

Do you do tree removal?

Yes. We handle tree removal and tree care on cottage and residential properties throughout the Muskoka area. If you have a tree that’s leaning, showing signs of disease, or posing a risk to your property, we can assess it and give you a straight answer on what needs to be done.

Why do you recommend natural stone over concrete for patios and stairs?

When it comes to choosing a product for your new landscape, it really comes down to budget. Natural stone is the most popular in our area because of its natural tones and texture that blends perfectly with the surrounding nature matching perfectly with the natural stone features in the area. Our stone products are sourced locally to keep this similarity. With respect to concrete products, there is a galaxy of options from size, shape and colour. While concrete may not have the same appeal as natural stone, concrete is still very functional and durable. In the design process we can blend some natural stone features with a concrete product to create a beautiful outdoor space while keeping budget in mind.

Why shouldn't I just use railway ties for a retaining wall?

Railway ties are cheap upfront, but they rot, they shift, and they don’t last in a Muskoka winter. Natural stone doesn’t rot. It handles the freeze-thaw cycle better than almost anything else, it gets better looking as it ages, and it adds real value to the property. The difference in cost is real, but so is the difference in how long it lasts. We’ve rebuilt a lot of retaining walls that started out as railway ties. We’d rather build yours once.
